Re: Many thanks....from SC RuffsRe: Burial locatio

The Confederate section of Woodland is a beautiful little spot, shaded and kept up well. Unfortuantely many, if not most of the graves there are unknowns. If Mr. Ruff died in a hospital at Ashland, the overwhelming probabliity is that he was buried there, in Woodland.

Oakwood is owned by the City of Richmond, and is pretty much a big field, not very well kept up by the city, not now in a very good section, and it looks as if the grass is rarely mown by the authorities. It is the final resitng palce for 16,000 + soldiers. Many unfortuantely are unknowns. There is a published listing of the known graves in this cemetery; maybe someone can point you to it.

By way of interest, there is a small Jewish Section at Oakwood. I seem to recall that it was the first cemetery in the country set aside for war dead who were Jewish. Oakwood is close to the battle fields east of Richmond, and also in reasonabley close proximity to Chimborazo. For those reasons, a lot of men who were killed in the battles east of the City, who were not buried on the field, found their way into Oakwood, as well as many who died at Chimborazo.

In addition to Oakwood, obviously a huge number of war dead were buried in Hollywood Cemetery, also woned by the city, and very well kept. Another Richmond cemetery which has a few Confederate dead is Shockhoe Cemetery, located almost downtown, near the Medical College.
