The Virginia in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Oakwood Cemetery Announcement

Charlene,

A Pvt. Zachariah Taylor Israel mustered into service at Washington Co., N. C. on April 23, 1864 in Co. H, 24th Virginia Infantry, for a period of 3 years "One of the elite fighting units of the Confederate Army of Northern Virgina."

He was wounded on May 17, 1864, most likely in the operations on the Bermuda Hundred front, VA.

He was admitted to the Receiving and Wayside Hospital No. 9, Richmond, Va, May 25, 1864, diagnosis, Vul Sclofit [sp?], believe Latin for gunshot wound.

He died July 18, 1864.

The above was derived from an internet service from the National Archives Compiled Service Records on Microform M382, Roll 29 and from the NPS Soldiers and Sailors system

I have lost my contact with his file, I will verify the above information tomorrow and adivse you if any information is incorect.

More information on the 24th Virginia can be found by a Goggle Search "24th Virginia Infantry."

Additionally, copies of his NA CSR's may be obtained from a service found in these message boards.
