Re: William K.Light-1st & 11th Va.Cav.?

Hi Scott,

Pretty sure these men are one and the same. William K. (R.) Light appears in the 1860 Census records as the 24 year-old son of John and Rachel Light of Berkley County, [West] Virginia. Company B of the 1st Virginia Cavalry, “John Blair Hoge’s Company”, was raised in Martinsburg, Berkley County.

In 1860, Light’s father, John, a minister, had real estate valued at $10, 300 and a personal estate of $3,200—enough to purchase the headstone at Oakwood Cemetery in Richmond that was probably out of the financial reach of the common man at the time. It is a shame that this beautiful piece of history has been broken. See:

As a side…just wondering if Light’s brother, Isaac N. Light (b.ca 1844) is the man by that name who served in the 6th Regiment U.S. Cavalry?
