Re: Dr. Robert G. (Green) Holloway, Jr. MD

Dr. Massey --

My apologies -- NARA is the National Archives and Records Administration. You're using the NPS index, which is based on NARA records, so I confused matters with my post.

Robert G. Holloway received an appointment as Assistant Surgeon June 10, 1863, to rank from Jan. 10, 1863. At that time he was stationed at Montgomery Springs, Va., attending the sick and wounded there. The Medical Director reassigned him to the Army of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Tenn., Nov. 20, 1863, but the retreat of that army into north Georgia made it impossible for Dr. Holloway to report as ordered until Jan. 13, 1864, when he arrived at Dalton, Ga.

As a side note, I take some small measure of pride in my list of staff officers assigned to Alabama Confederate commands. It came as some surprise to learn that Dr. Holloway was assigned to duty with the 30th Alabama Regiment in the brigade of Gen. Edmond W. Pettus. I'm pleased to add Dr. Holloway's record of service to my list.

R. G. Holloway served with that regiment until reassigned to the Army of Northern Virginia on Oct. 5, 1864. Later that month he signed receipts for feed provided to his horse at Gordonsville and Hampton (?) Va. That's the last I could find about his service.

Prior to his commission Dr. Holloway provided service at General Hospital No. 6 in Richmond, Va. If he was under contract with the government to provide medical services at that time, it's possible there are records for him in the National Archives collection for CSA business transactions.

On Dec. 1, 1925 Lillie A. Holloway applied for pension relief in her husband's name. Her Virginia pension application includes verification of service which summarizes his career somewhat as I have above. You may note that another man named Robert G. Holloway served for a year in Co. "C", 18th Virginia Regiment, but he enlisted in Nottaway County at age 45 and gave his occupation as blacksmith.

Perhaps in his declining years Dr. Holloway read news accounts concerning Senator Pettus of Alabama, whom he had served under during the Atlanta Campaign in 1864.

Thanks for bring Dr. Holloway of Caroline County to my attention. We can provide copies of any of the files mentioned, and review CSA business records for anything further.
