Hi Scott,

Interesting project. What is the source of this listing? Two of these names jumped out at me. I’ll see what I can dig up on others later.

According to P.O.W. records, DAVID CROCKETT of Company C, 24th Virginia Infantry died on May 14, 1864 at Fort Monroe, Virginia from “V.S. Abdomen Intestines” [abdominal gunshot wound]. Crockett appears on the 1860 Census of Carroll County, Virginia, age 23, “tinner” [tinsmith or tin miner], residing in a local hotel.

ANDREW F. MANNING appears in P.O.W. records as “A. F. Manning, 30 Va” who was taken prisoner at Winchester. The men listed with Manning as members of the “30th Va” appear in the Compiled Service Records of the 30th Battalion Virginia Sharpshooters. The following information is derived from my book Tears on the Bluestone—regimental histories and biographical rosters of the 151st Virginia Militia and the Flat Top Copperheads. Is his date of death listed as November 1, 1865?

MANNING, ANDREW F. --- Private, Company B, 151st Virginia Militia, enlisted on 8/21/1861 at Princeton, Mercer County, [West] Virginia --- 1860 MCC, age 27, farmer, married to Jane, age 20. Appears on the 1850 Census of Giles County, Virginia, age 18, laborer, residing with parents, John and Margaret Manning. Enlisted in Napoleon B. French’s Mercer Artillery on 6/1/1862 in Giles County, Virginia. This unit became Company B, 30th Battalion Virginia Sharpshooters by 10/31/1862. Detailed as a teamster at Post Bristol from November 1863 to March 1864, and again by December 1864. Hospitalized in June and August 1864 with knee problems. Captured at Winchester, Virginia on 9/19/1864. POW at Point Lookout, Maryland. Exchanged on 11/1/1864. Returned to unit on 12/8/1864 after being hospitalized at Charlottesville. [Although two prisoner-of-war records state that Manning was exchanged on 11/1/1864, one record indicates that Manning was sent to Aiken’s Landing for exchange on March 15, 1865.] Nancy Jane Manning appears as head of household on the 1870 Census of Mercer County, West Virginia, East River District.
