To Mr. Chapla Re : Ens. Joseph H. Pickle, 50th Va

Mr. Chapla,

My Gr. Grand father, Mathew H. Deatherage, one of his brothers, Sampson, and two of his cousins are listed in the regimental roster of your book on the 50th Virginia Infantry.

Mathew was given a medical discharge from the infantry early in the War but re-enlisted in the 8th Va. Cavalry after Sampson was killed in action at the Elk River, Charleston (WV) in 1862.

Mathew's mother's maiden name was Elizabeth Pickle (or Pickel) and she was originally from Smyth County (which used to be part of Wythe Co. before the War).

In the roster, the regimental color bearer, Ens. Joseph H. Pickle, is shown to have enlisted in Grayson Co. in 1861. (Grayson Co. also used to be part of Wythe Co.)

Do you have any information that says where Ens. Pickle may have been born; I'm trying to see if he was a relation.

Thanks for any info.

Dave Deatherage
Great Grandson of Mathew Henry Deatherage
