Re: To Mr. Chapla Re : Ens. Joseph H. Pickle, 50th

There are Pickles aplenty on the 1850 Census of Smyth County, Virginia including 17 year-old Joseph Pickle, who later served in the 48th Virginia Infantry. He died in service in April 1864. Tobias Pickle, born about 1774 in North Carolina, appears to be the patriarch of the Smyth branch of the family, totaling 48 in 1850.

Joseph H. Pickle of the 50th Virginia is among 11 Pickles appearing on the 1850 Census in Grayson County, Virginia, age 6, born in Virginia, son of Amos and Polly Pickle. Amos Pickle was born circa 1802, and was a resident of Smyth County in 1840.
