Hello Dave,

Impossible to tell if Elizabeth Deatherage was Joseph H. Pickle's aunt by looking at census records. Family members other than head-of-household are not listed prior to 1850.

In 1850 William and Elizabeth "Detherage" were living at Quaker Gap in Stokes County, North Carolina.

I would try establishing the Elizabeth Deatherage/Amos Pickle connection by contacting someone in the Pickle family in Smyth County. If you could find a record of Elizabeth's marriage... oftentimes father's of bride are named.
