My sources indcate that John G. Deatherage was in Co B, 8th Va Cav. Probably a misprint on the carve instructions.
You ought to have them change it from the "D" to a "B". I agree with you, during the war, if family members joined up they usually joined the same company, if possible - that was true north or South.
