Re: Virginians Buried in Beaufort Nat'l Cemetery

Scott:

I should give credit where credit is due. The South Carolina Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy compiled, edited, and published a 12 volume set of a collection of their papers, which includes many letters and reminiscences by the veterans themselves, interspersed with inventories of of various cemeteries, rosters, biographical sketches of veterans and their children and grandchildren who served in World War I. The title of the work is the rather unwieldy Recollections and Reminiscences 1861-1865 through World War I. The listing of Beaufort National Cemetery appears to have been done shortly before the publication of Volume XII, in which this appeared, in the late 1990's. The information in the 12 volumes is anything but unwieldy; it is a real treasure. I have had the opportunity to compare a few of the letters which are in the various volumes with the manuscript letters themselves, and the ladies did a masterful job of transcribing them.

For what its worth, the Georgia Division of the UDC is in the midst of a similar project; they started a little later, and are now up to Volume 15 or 16. But out of a sense of perhaps inflated Palmetto pride, I should point out that the South Carolina volumes run in the range of 900 to 1000 pages each, while those of the Georgia volumes are about half that. But they are still going strong, and its an excellent resource.

Does anyone know if the Daughters are doing, or have done, similar projects in other States?
