This battalion was organized in July and August 1863, at Richmond, and was composed of three companies, A to C. It was known at various times as Browne's Reconnoissance Cavalry Corps; Browne's Battalion of Cavalry, Local Defense; and as the 1st Bn Va Cav, Local Defense Troops. The stables of this command were located on Marshall Street, between 18th and 19th Streets.
Co A - Capt William S. Wood's Co; mustered in on July 1, 1863, for term of "Residence in the City" of Richmond; composed of employees of the Quartermaster Department and others.
Co B - French's Mounted Guard; mustered into State service June 28, 1863, and into Confederate States service, August 24, 1863, for the term during "Residence in Richmond or its environs". Capatain William H. Haywood
Co C - Capt Nathaniel M. Norfleet's Co; formerly reported as Co B, Browne's Reconnaissance Corps; enlisted July 15, 1863, for the term of "Residence in the City" of Richmond.
