"John Henry Graydon, the son of James Graydon, was born on July 11, 1830 in Carrick, near McGires Bridge, Ireland. The family migrated to Canada in the 1840's, but John apparently, eventually travelled on to New Zealand, later returning to America. He is thought to have served during the American Civil War in Company D of the 1st Missouri Light Artillery and is mentioned in the book "Lee Through Virginia" written by Hugh Wynne. He is said to have enlisted as a Private in Battery D, 1st Regiment, Missouri Light Artillery, as a U.S. Volunteer on October 7, 1861 at Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

Battery D, 1st Missouri Light Artillery was attached to the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, District of Cairo in February, 1862 and was a part of various other commands throughout the war; ending up in Huntsville, Alabama and the Department of the Cumberland in April 1865.

They saw duty in the Dept. of Missouri until February 1862, participated in operations against Fort Henry, Tennessee from February 2nd through the 6th, participated in the capture of Fort Donelson, Tennessee from February 12th through the 16th, the Battle of Shiloh, Tennessee on April 6th & 7th, the siege of Corinth, Mississippi from April 29th through May 30th, took part in the Battle of Corinth on October 3rd & 4th and was part of Dodge's Expedition to Northern Alabama from April 15th through May 8th.

Graydon was discharged on October 7, 1864 at Huntsville, Alabama; as a Union Missouri Volunteer. He was said to have been married in Australia in 1863, but logic dictates that may be in error, since he was not discharged from Union service until 1864. Family oral history does relate though that he fought in the Civil War; there being many stories of him being addressed as "Captain Graydon" in Australia. According to Victoria Immigration records he arrived in Australia in May 1872 at age 50, aboard the ship “Essex” and is recorded as having died in on July 2, 1906; being buried in the Yarragon Cemetery in the Gippsland area of Victoria; at 89 years of age."
