The Virginia in the Civil War Message Board

Re: "With Lee Through Virginia"

Thanks, I have already checked these out. The officer, John C. Graydon, who served in the Alabama Cavalry, also could not be our man, as he joined in early 1863, by which time the Graydon who came to Australia (arrived in Melbourne in March, 1862, and married in Melbourne in 1863) was already in Australia.
If unable to locate a copy of that volume, WITH LEE THROUGH VIRGINIA, then I will have to come to the conclusion that the John Graydon, buried in Australia, had never served in the Civil War, and his service is only part of family lore. There are quite a large number of such myths about ancestors serving in the Civil War, doing the rounds of families in Australia. If we were to accept all of them as factual, I am certain we could end up with billions of Civil War veterans buried in Australia and New Zealand!!
