Re: Battle of Cove Gap, May 10 1864

The National Archives Guide Index describes the fighting near Wytheville as an "engagement" --

The account in Moore says the engagement took place eight miles from Wytheville at Cove Gap. Presumably this referred to the gap between Cove Mountain and Queen's Knob through which Cove Creek issues, although this gap is little more than three miles from Wytheville (the crossing of Little Walker Mountain is about eight miles distant). The mountain "cove" drained by Cove Creek is called Crockett Cove on modern maps.
