John Calvin Rouse -- 48th Va.
In Response To: Re: Attn.-John Chapla ()

Larry: Thanks for contacting me about the subsequent service of John Calvin Rouse. According to the records I have, he stayed with the 48th until April 1864 and then deserted. He was furnished transportation to Philadelphia, Pa. Interestingly, he was among a reported 50 men from Jones' Brigade who deserted in mid-April 1864 during the week when the brigade was on picket along the Rapidan River. Don't know what was going on in Jones' Brigade at the time to cause such a mass exodus that included at least 6 men in the 48th. I would certainly like to know more about why John Calvin Rouse and the others deserted when they did and would like to get more details of Rouse's service in the 3rd NC Mounted Infantry (US). Any idea why he went initially to Philadelphia? Where and when did he join the NC outfit? What made him go back into service on the Union side? What about his life after the war?
