Re: Buford Grays 42nd Virginia Infantry

Hello Ms. Spears,

First, let me say that the Phillip [Philip] Duffy [Duffey]identified by "Johnny Reb" seems to be the only man by that name in the area of Bedford County. There were men by that name in the western portion of the state, in counties that are now in West Virginia. Bedford County marriage records indicate that Philip Duffy and Eliza Ann Witt were married in that county on January 9, 1847. According to the 1880 Census, the Duffys were not literate.

The following is from "2nd Virginia Cavalry" by Robert J. Driver, Jr. and H. E. Howard:

DUFFY, PHILIP: Private, Company I [Campbell Rangers]. Born circa 1814. Enlisted in Campbell County on June 8, 1861. Age 47. Present through June 30, 1861 and August 1861 to January 18, 1862. No further record with the 2nd Virginia Cavalry. Probably discharged for overage.

The following is from "42nd Virginia Infantry" by John Chapla:

DUFFY, PHILIP: Private. Company F [Leatherwood Fencibles of Henry County, Virginia]. Enlisted by June 1864 when he deserted at Cold Harbor. [Place and date of enlistment are not given.] Captured near Turkey-pen and stated desire to take the oath on March 28, 1865. Sent to Provost Marshal at Pungoteague, Accomac County. Confined at Norfolk on April 1, 1865. No further record with the 42nd Virginia Infantry.

I think "Turkey-pen" may be Craddockville, Virginia, but that is a long way from Cold Harbor--across the Chesapeake Bay. Perhaps someone else can elaborate on this. I can find no prisoner-of-war records outside of what is listed by Mr. Chapla.

On August 22, 1884, Phillip Duffey, a resident of Motley's Depot, Virginia filed a disability application for service in the 2nd Virginia Cavalry. Duffey states that while a member of the 2nd Va. Cavalry he was "wounded in the right foot near Manassas Junction by a rifle ball in June 1861."

In August 1900, Eliza A. Duffey [with an e] a resident of "Motley's Station", applied for a widow's pension from the state of Virginia. This document, difficult to read and somewhat confusing, states that Phillip Duffy died from "chronic diarrhrea". You may want to order a clearer copy from the Virginia State Library in Richmond.

Order copies of Duffy's Compiled Military Service Records and examine them for yourself. You will need to order one for his service in the 2nd Va. Cavalry and another for his service with the 42nd Va. Infantry.
