Re: Buford Grays 42nd Virginia Infantry

Ms. Spears,

The fact that Mr. Duffy was a Quaker is interesting, since members of the Religious Society of Friends were traditionally opposed to both war and slavery.

The 1850 U.S. Federal Census Slave Schedule of Campbell County, Virginia indicates that Phillip Duffy was the owner of a 12 year-old female slave. When Duffy enlisted in the 2nd Virginia Cavalry in 1861, he volunteered willingly, since he was over the age requirement even for local militia service. Interesting contradictions.

There is an interesting little piece regarding Quaker military service during the Civil War @

Hats off to John Chapla for his continued interest and dedication to the regiments he "adopted" for H. E. Howard's Virginia Regimental Histories Series. It is little wonder that his works rank among the best ever done for the series.
