The Virginia in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Halfway House & Gooches Farm

You may already have access to it, but the answer to almost any question like this will be found in the five-volume series Military Operations of the Civil War: A Guide-lndex to the Official Records Of The Union And Confederate Armies, 1861-1865.

The guide-index was conceived by Dallas Irvine, the former senior specialist in Military Archives and a longtime staff member of the National Archives. The series was designed to help the user of Official Records to understand the organization of the printed material and to make the tremendous amount of printed documentation about military operations more accessible. Dr. Irvine analyzed the published Official Records and gathered information from the holdings of the National Archives that include both the records of the War Records Office of the War Department, the agency that compiled Official Records, and the Union and Confederate records from which the published documents were selected.

After Dr. Irvine retired, work on the present volume was continued by his associate, Dale Floyd. Because the task of completing the series as originally planned would have taken many years, the National Archives decided to limit the scope of the series and to complete it through a team effort.

The first volume serves as a general guide to the 127 volumes of documents and one index volume published by the War Department in The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records Of The Union And Confederate Armies (Washington:Government Printing Office, 1880-1901) and to the Atlas to Accompany The Official Records (Washington: GPO, 1891-95). That volume is being published both in a condensed printed version and in full length as National Archives microfilm publication M1036. The remaining four volumes consist of indexes to and lists of Civil War military operations recognized in the Official Records, Armies, arranged by theaters of operations as follows:

II. Main Eastern Theater of Operations
III. Lower Seaboard Theater of Operations and Gulf Approach (1861-1863), Main Western Theater
IV. Main Western Theater of Operations except Gulf Approach (1861-1863)
V. Trans-Mississippi and Pacific Coast Theaters of Operations

Some changes have been made in the contents of volumes II-V since this series was begun. As originally projected, each volume was to consist of five sections, lettered L-P, as follows:

L. Tables of Key Reports for Principal Military Operations
M. Comprehensive Index of Recognized Military Operations
N. Checklist of Recognized Military Operations by State and Date
O. Checklist of Recognized Military Operations by State, County, and Date
P. Peculiarities of Particular "Volumes" and Books of Series I

To avoid duplication, complete entries are no longer carried under each designation appearing in the title of an operation. Instead, the complete entry is given only once, and cross-references are provided for the other designations. Volume 8 of Official Army Register of the Volunteer Force of the United States Army for the Years 1861, 62, 63, 64, 65 (8 vols. called parts, Washington: Adjutant General's Office, 1865-1867) is now regularly cited for casualty information about colored troop units. Similarly, Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships (5 vols. to date, Washington: GPO, 1959-) is now cited for information concerning particular vessels.

It's available on CD along with the Official Records &c.
