Thanks for responding Jim Martin. My post was confusing. Augustus Henry Cooke and Samuel Branch Cooke were brothers. I could be wrong about the middle name of Branch. My father born in 1924 was the 6th Augustus Henry Cooke passed from father to son. There was also always a son named Samuel. My dad had a brother sam, his dad had a bro sam, his dad had a bro sam and so on. Branch was several of these fellows middle names. I can possibly find out more about where we lived in Virginia,alas all of my dads generation are gone . There might be an obscure cousin I can locate that might know something. My father Henry was a 6th generation bricklayer. The story goes, according to my great uncle Samuel Branch Cooke, that the brothers had signed on early in virginia where they lived. They did thier time, wanted to get away from the fighting, them and other families headed for Cinncinnatti because of much work there and it was away from the fighting. The families made it to the Ohio river where they lashed together some flat boats. Not far from the queen city the boats needed repair. They landed on the ohio side to make repairs. Little did they know where they had landed was Point Pleasant, birthplace of Mr U.S.Grant. Before they had moved on, a lynch mob (so great uncle called it)came out and wanted the southern folks to pay homage to Mr Grant, a fight ensued one of the Cookes waded among them with a tomahawk and some were killed and wounded. The Cookes fled back upriver and that is where they ended up settling around lawrence county,ohio and greenup county, ky.There was an old tin type picture that I remember as a child that showed the brothers Henry and Sam with thier name on the side of a wagon that said bricklayed and teeth pulled.
