Chris -- Read your note of March 12 about Sallie Tompkins running a hospital in Richmond during the Civil War. Also that she was designated a Captain by Jefferson Davis.

My research -- including an old, lengthy article in a Lynchburg newspaper -- said that Lucy Wilhelmina Otey spearhead the creation of a hospital in Lynchburg to care for wounded Confederates, and that Jefferson Davis commissioned her a captain. She was the mother of of my great, great grandmother who married Maj. John Stewart Walker, who was killed at the Battle of Malvern Hill.

If you have more information pertaining to Mrs. Otey or the Stewarts -- such as sources, clippings, present day relatives, etc. -- I would appreciative any leads.

Thank you for your attention. -- David Walker McCullough, Asheville, N.C.
