Regimental History

Gettysburg after battle report:

Reports of Col. L. L. Lomax, Eleventh Virginia Cavalry.

June 9, 1863.
Capt.: I beg leave to submit the following report of the part
taken by this regiment in the late engagement:

The regiment moved out about sunrise to the brick church on the
road from Brandy Station to the river, where we remained formed in
the woods until the enemy advanced from the woods in front, when
we charged them, driving them back through the woods, killing and
capturing several.

In this charge, we passed a column of the enemy's cavalry charging
our battery near the church. This was attacked by a squadron under
Lieut.-Col. Funsten, and repulsed with a slight loss on our
side. The regiment was again formed in the woods, and the sharpshooters
dismounted and deployed in front, under Lieut.'s [Joseph
H.] Sherrard, Company H, and [William M.] Hockman, Company
E. Both of these officers were severely wounded and brought
to the rear, Lieut. Hockman's wound proving fatal.

I then moved the regiment to the support of a battery on our right,
leaving the sharpshooters in front communicating with those of Gen.
W. H. F. Lee's brigade, on our left, but was ordered in a short
time by the major-general commanding to attack the enemy's cavalry,
now advancing from the right and rear of our present position.
Moving rapidly in the direction of Brandy Station, I charged
the enemy on the right of the Culpeper Court-House road, drove
them across the railroad, capturing a battery of three guns and
many prisoners. Observing a force of the enemy at Brandy Station,
I moved toward that point, and found three regiments of cavalry,
under Sir Percy Wyndham, plundering and destroying the property
there. I charged, and drove them from the station, taking a stand
of colors and many prisoners (among them a colonel), and pursued
them some distance on the Stevensburg road.

I was then ordered by the major-general commanding to advance
upon Culpeper Court-House, and drive the enemy, reported to be
there, from that point, and to place a picket on the Stevensburg road.
I sent 200 men to Culpeper Court-House, and ascertained that no
enemy had been there, and sent a squadron on the Stevensburg road.
This squadron captured the enemy's picket of 14 men, and sent in
during the evening 20 men.

Our loss during the day was 5 killed and 11 wounded. Among the
first was Lieut. Hockman, Company E; and of the wounded
are Maj. [M. D.] Ball, and Lieut. Sherrard, Company H. The
regiment captured, as far as the company commander can ascertain,
122 prisoners. Our loss in prisoners is small; the exact number not
known (but does not exceed 5 or 6), as missing men are still reporting.

A return of the property captured by the regiment accompanies
this report.*

The universal good conduct of officers and men need not be commented
upon by me, as they were acting under the eye of both brigade
and division commanders.

L. L. LOMAX,
Col., Comdg. Eleventh Virginia Cavalry.

Capt. W. K. Martin, A. A. G., Jones' Cavalry Brigade.

-----

July 30, 1863.
Capt.: I have the honor to make the following report of the
part taken by my regiment in the recent campaign in Maryland and
Pennsylvania:

The regiment crossed the Potomac River on the 1st instant, and
encamped for the night near Greencastle, and the next day moved
to beyond Chambersburg, Pa.

On the 3d instant, reached Fairfield, and, during the engagement
at that point, was held in reserve. The regiment picketed at and
beyond Fairfield that night and the next day, taking a number of
prisoners, who had been scattered in the fight on the day previous.

On the 4th instant, the regiment was in line of battle all evening,
supporting Moorman's battery on the road leading from Fairfield to
Emmitsburg. Capt. [A. J.] Ware, with two companies (F and G),
having been sent forward on the road to ascertain the position of the
enemy, found a regiment of cavalry advancing, which he drove back
nearly to the intersection of the road with the Emmitsburg pike.

On the 5th instant, the regiment was ordered to take post on the
road crossing the mountain, and leading to the Emmitsburg pike.
Capt. [John R.] Pendleton was ordered to take his company, and
move on the pike to the top of Jack's Mountain, to ascertain the
movements of a cavalry column of the enemy that had passed the
evening before. Capt. Pendleton took a number of prisoners and
horses from the stragglers of the enemy, but found no enemy in force.
Capt. [E. H.] McDonald, with his company, late in the day was
ordered along the same road, with instructions to keep it open. Capt.
[M. M.] Ball was ordered to Emmitsburg, to open communication
with Maj.-Gen. Stuart, supposed to be at that point. Capt.
Ball found the enemy picketing about 3 miles from Emmitsburg,
and drove the pickets in. On reaching Emmitsburg, he found the
enemy in possession of the town in some force, and was forced to
retire, with the loss of 1 man severely wounded.

On the night of the same day, Lieut.-Gen. Ewell having
sent word that the rear of the train had been attacked by a force of
artillery and cavalry, the Eleventh Regt. was ordered to Fairfield,
where it remained until the rear of the train had passed. Reached
camp at 1 a. m., and moved at 3 a. m. in the direction of Cavetown.
Reached that point at 12 o'clock, and moved in the direction of Hagerstown,
Md.

On approaching Hagerstown, found the enemy in possession of the
town, and engaged on the right by Maj.-Gen. Stuart with his
forces. The enemy having been driven from the town, moved on
the Williamsport pike; found two regiments of the enemy drawn up
in line across the pike and in the field to the left, their artillery on
the brow of a hill, raking the pike, their right being protected by a
stone wall, with only one gap to enter their field. The regiment was
moved parallel with the pike until within about 500 yards of the
enemy's position, when it turned into the pike, under a heavy fire
from the enemy's battery; moved slowly until within 200 yards of
the enemy, when the command to charge was given. The column
on the pike was completely broken and dispersed; a number of prisoners,
horses, &c., captured. Finding two squadrons in the field still
in line and moving toward the stone fence, which would afford them
good protection from a charge and from our fire, the regiment was
rallied, and moved back on the pike to the gap, formed in line, and
charged the enemy in the field, with success.

I would state that the regiment while engaged was entirely unsupported
by sharpshooters or by any regiment moving up to the
charge; was exposed to a deadly fire of artillery, and, when rallied,
was completely in rear of the squadrons in the field, and within a
few yards of the enemy's battery. The gap in the stone fence was
well contested by the enemy, but they could not stand the impetuous
charge of the regiment. In this engagement about 100 prisoners and
50 horses were captured. The headquarters of the regiment, with
two squadrons, remained on the battle-field during the night, and
moved the next morning below Hagerstown, to picket on the Cavetown
and adjacent roads.

The regiment was ordered the next morning to move with the brigade
in the direction of Boonsborough. A force of the enemy was
found posted 2 miles from the town. The sharpshooters, being dismounted
and sent forward, were engaged the greater part of the day,
driving the enemy steadily toward town, the loss in wounded being
6. The remainder of the regiment was not actively engaged, but
supported a battery exposed to heavy shelling, resulting in the loss
of several horses. The sharpshooters of the regiment were engaged
all the next day with the advance of the enemy near Funkstown, the
remainder of the regiment supporting.

On the 13th instant, the regiment was ordered to withdraw from
the bridge on the Cavetown road, and to retire through Hagerstown
on the Williamsport pike, two pieces of artillery being placed under
my command. On passing through Hagerstown, the rear of the
regiment was charged by the enemy's cavalry from two streets, but
quickly repulsed by sharpshooters, with a loss of 10 or 12, the loss of
the regiment being 1 prisoner and 3 wounded.

After passing through the town, I moved on the Williamsport
pike; placed the artillery in position to fire upon a column of the
enemy's cavalry moving on the Boonsborough pike. The enemy's
column on that road was completely broken and turned back, none
passing while I remained in position. The regiment was ordered to
the Greencastle road, to picket, where it remained without anything
of importance occurring until the afternoon, when the regiment was
ordered to recross the river.

I would state, in conclusion, that both officers and men of the
regiment endured all hardships without a murmur. As the regiment,
when engaged, was under the immediate eye of the major-
general commanding, no comments from me will be necessary.

Respectfully submitted.

L. L. LOMAX,
Col., Comdg.

Capt. W. K. Martin,
Assistant Adjutant-Gen.

The Rappahannock cavalry fight.
Culpeper C. H., June12, 1863. To the Editor of the Dispatch:
The accounts in the Richmond papers of the severe cavalry fight on the 9th inst., are erroneous in so many particulars that they demand some notice. These accounts allege that the cavalry were "surprised," Gen. Stuart outgeneraled, his headquarters fired into before the enemy's presence was suspected, etc. All these statements are wholly unfounded. Having been present during the whole engagement, I have it in my power to state correctly all that occurred. The actual events of the day were as follows:

About 5 in the morning the enemy in heavy force — more than 10,000 in number — commenced crossing the river at Beverley's, Rappahannock, Kelly's, and the intermediate fords, cavalry, infantry, and artillery, with five days rations, for an extensive raid, as was subsequently ascertained upon the communications of the enemy. Brig-Gen. Jones, whose pickets guarded Beverly's ford, moved down to their support, and the Stuart Horse Artillery, commanded by Maj. Beckham, was brought early into action, the enemy's advance being checked at St. james's Church.--Subsequently

shipBrig
Gen. W. H. F. Lee, whose command guarded the river bank above, moved down with his command on the enemy's right flank and rear, and had a spirited engagement near Cunningham's house, while Gen. Hampton's brigade moved to the right of Jones's in the extensive plain in front of Fleetwood heights. The enemy brought their artillery into action in Jones's front, but it was speedily driven from the field by a rapid fire concentrated upon it by the guns of the Horse Artillery.

The conflict continued along this line, and around the Hazel river, during the greater part of the forenoon. The enemy had posted their infantry in the woods, and this alone prevented us from completely routing their cavalry. The latter were repeatedly driven back by Hampton, Jones and Lee, and were compelled to retire at all points behind their infantry supports.

Intelligence having reached Gen. Stuart, who commanded in person in front of Beverley's ford, that the enemy were crossing with infantry and cavalry at Kelly's ford, some miles below, Brig. Gen. Robertson, whose pickets guarded that ford, was sent with his brigade in that direction. the enemy occupied his attention with a considerable force in front, and taking advantage of that circumstance made a flank movement by Carrico's mill, in the direction of Stephensburg, moving the main body, however, directly upon Brandy Station. This movement was foreseen by Gen. Stuart and provided against, by sending Butler's and Wickham's regiments to Stephensburg — the movement being thus in no sense a surprise, as some of the newspaper accounts state. A larger force could not prudently be sent to repel this flank attack. It was necessary to keep the main body of the cavalry — threatened and attacked at so many points — in a compact mass, to be hurled upon the enemy with overwhelming effect, instead of frittering it away in detachments to guard all the roads and passes, upon any one of which the enemy could concentrate and overwhelm it. The main body was kept together under the command of Gen. Stuart--the enemy's movement from the direction of Stephensburg was watched, and every precaution was taken to defeat it. In anticipation of the threatened attack all the trains were moved back from Brandy Station and Fleetwood heights, where Gen. Stuart's headquarters had been on the day before; no property of any description was left, and a dismounted battalion was directed to move out from Brandy Station to repel the enemy then approaching. The failure of the battalion to get into position promptly alone prevented a successful repulse at this point at the moment.

When the enemy's movement in that direction was fully developed, first Jones's and then Hampton's brigades were moved directly toward Brandy. The advance of the enemy's cavalry had succeeded in reaching the heights of Fleetwood before ours; but our cavalry charged gallantly up the hill, and, after a severe conflict, lasting for some time, drove them from its top and occupied this commanding position. In this hot encounter our artillery played a handsome part. Three pieces of the enemy's artillery were captured and held, and turned upon the enemy. Not one piece of our artillery was captured--though at times the cannoneers fought the cavalry which charged them, with sword and pistol, in their defence. In this conflict Jones's brigade occupied the centre, moving directly upon the hill — Hampton's brigade, with Robertson advancing to his support, moved more upon the enemy's right flank and rear. The two former suffered heavily — the latter was only slightly engaged. The enemy were repulsed, fled in every direction, and only escaped capture and annihilation by taking to the woods and sheltering himself behind his infantry and artillery, which moved quickly to his support. One regiment of Jones's brigade charged their flying columns for some distance down the road leading to Carrico's Mills.

While this was going on [ on ] the right Gen. W. H. F Lee's brigade, whose position it became necessary to change by this new combination, became hotly engaged on the extreme left with Buford's regulars. This conflict terminated gloriously for us. The enemy's line was broken, and Gen. Fitz Lee's brigade coming in upon their flank at this fortunate moment, the enemy were driven through the open space by Dr. Green's entirely back to Beverley's ford. Portions of Jones's and Hampton's brigades were moved to the support of Gen. W. H. F. Lee's brigade during this contest on the left, but did not become engaged.

At Stephensburg Cols. Butler and Wickham also had hard fighting, in which both regiments were very hard pressed; but by night the entire force of the enemy had been driven across the river.

This battle was undoubtedly the largest and most desperate cavalry fight of the war. We took in the battle 3 pieces of rifled artillery, with the horses; 5 stands of colors, about 600 small arms, over 350 prisoners, (including 12 officers,) and inflicted a loss in killed and wounded upon the enemy probably about three times as great as our own. Our loss all told — killed, wounded, and missing — was about 350--certainly under 400. The loss of officers upon both sides was heavy, and showed the animus with which the battle was fought.

On the Federal side, Col. Davis, formerly of Mississippi, and acting Brigadier-General, was killed--one of the best cavalry officers in the Federal service. Col. Percy Wyndham reported by his own men wounded, and several field officers were left dead upon the field. A large number of their killed and wounded were carried off. Among the officers whose death we have to mourn, are Col. Sol. Williams, 2nd N. C. cavalry; Lieut. Col. Frank Hampton, 2nd S. C., and Capt. Jones, 1st S. C.Col. Butler, 2nd S. C., was so severely wounded as to require the amputation of his foot; and Brig-Gen. W. H. F. Lee received a flesh wound in the leg, at the close of his glorious success. Col. Harman, 12th Va, Capt. White, acting on Gen. Stuart's staff, and many other officers were wounded. Among the killed was Captain Farley, of S. C., volunteer aid on Gen. Stuart's staff, an accomplished officer, who had been with the cavalry from the commencement of the war. His loss cannot be supplied.

The above narrative will show that the movement of the enemy upon Brandy was in no sense a surprise, as has been alleged,--that Gen. Stuart's headquarters and train had been removed beyond all danger — and that General Jones was not taken by surprise at Beverley's. To the praise of our cavalry, be it said, our pickets were never eluded; they never lost sight of the enemy, and the result of this obstinately contested battle was honorable to Southern valor and determination, and glorious to the cavalry.
