I believe that the Edward W. Redford that you reference was his son. I have found information that he was sick at home in Goochland Co., VA for the entire enlistment period. I have not been able to find his age; however, Edward W. Sr. had a son born in 1841. The elder Redford was supposed to have died in WV in 1861. I have not been able to find additional information.
