Five Forks
The Confederate disaster at Five Forks (March 30-April 1, 1865) spelled the end of Lee's defense at Petersburg. General Sheridan's forces overwhelmed the outnumbered Confederate force holding the vital crossroads. Confederate General's Pickett and Fitzhugh Lee wre at a shad bake at Hatcher's Run when the battle began. Confederate commanders at the scene attempted to organize a defense, but the Confederates were pushed from the field and many disorganized Rebels were quickly captured.
Different sources give widely varying estimates of numbers and losses in the battle. D. S. Freeman estimates the Confederate force at 10,000 and agrees with the Union estimate of ovr 5,000 Confederate prisoners. The United States Christian Commission's 1865 report listed two Confederates buried at Five Forks. Today, a headstone in the yard of the historic Burnt Quarter house reads:

Buried in this yard six unknown Confederate soldiers Killed in the battle of Five Forks April 1, 1865.

Perhaps Oliver Perry Rader is one of them.
