Chapla - 42nd Virginia Infantry

Hello Mr. Chapla,

Since I coaxed the Mangus obituary out of Mr. Boone, I suppose I should put my money where my mouth is regarding the sharing of information. The following pertains to the Heard/Hurd and Lavinder brothers in the 42nd Virginia.

Elkanah B. Heard – Born January 8, 1837 in Henry County, Virginia. Died on April 8, 1862 at Winchester Virginia.

William H. Heard Jr. – Born September 18, 1835 in Henry County, Virginia. Died on March 25, 1897. Buried at Reed Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Henry County. His headstone is spelled HURD. A few of his brothers retained the HEARD spelling, others did not.

Jesse Benjamin Lavinder – Born September 22, 1842 in Henry County, Virginia. Died on August 18, 1903. Buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Henry County. Listed in the 1900 Martinsville Census as a dry goods merchant. He was the president of Farmer’s Bank in Martinsville and a member of Martinsville Methodist Church. I have a photo of him. Shoot me an email and I will send it to you.

John Peter Lavinder –Born January 6, 1837 in Henry County, Virginia. Died on March 15, 1918. Buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Henry County. Listed in the 1900 Martinsville Census as a merchant and in 1910 as an operator of a general store. After the war, he worked as a tavern keeper and a carpenter.
