Hank Jordan, former editor of the North Carolina Troops roster project, was the principal organizer and writer for the collaborative effort that actually produced three published articles: Soldier of Misfortune; "O what A turbil affair" about Reynolds' Va-NC Brigade at Missionary Ridge in North Carolina Historical Review, July 2000; and "Notorious as the Noonday Sun:" Capt. A.W. Reynolds and the New Mexico Territory, 1849-1859, in the New Mexico Historical Review, October 2000.

The scattered nature of the records pertaining to Reynolds' service required the collaboration. I did the bulk of the research in the National Archives and Library of Congress, building on the work I had done on Reynolds in connection with my writing of the regiment he commanded, the 50th Virginia. Shan Sutton researched the pertinent New Mexico records.

Reynolds letters are at West Virginia University and he has some material at the Library of Congress pertaining to his wartime service. In the National Archives is an extensive file on his pre-war service, both in the Quatermaster General records and the Adjutant Generals records.

There are some references in the footnotes of Soldier of Misfortune to the NA service record of Col. James W. Gillespie, 43 Tenn. If I recall, letters in that service record deal with Reynolds' regimental commanders writing the CS A&IGO Samuel Cooper asking that Reynolds be relieved and replaced with an officer from Tenn.

Since we did not focus in detail on Reynolds' varied war-time career, I do not know that I have a lot of material on him, but I would be happy to check what I do have and get back to you.
