The William H. Caldwell who was in your list of Caldwells in this battalion (a Private in Co. F) died of Typhoid Fever on 18 May 1863 at Emory & Henry College which is in southwestern VA. And, as far as I can tell, his first enlistment was on 31 Jan 1863 at New Castle, Craig Co., VA. It would be interesting to find out how he happened to die at the college instead of someplace closer to Beverly, or some place en route to the next battle. I understand from my research that the college was on a railroad, so am trying to figure out if William was sent there on a train, or if his battalion was passing through that part of VA en route to its next assignment?
Also, I found a CSA record for a William Caldwell who enlisted in the 54th Virginia Infantry Regiment on the same date at the same place as the above William, and who died at the same place on the same date as the above William. The above William's widow was Mariah F. Caldwell who stated in her widow's pension app (and her witness also stated) that her husband was assigned to the 30th VA Batt SS...was the 54th VA Regiment a part of the 30th VA Battalion Sharpshooters, or what? I'm so confused!
Thanks!
