From a quick examination of census records--it appears that James T. Handy was the son of Saunders W. Handy. The 1860 Census of Patrick County shows Saunders (age 13) living with William and Mary A. Handy. William Handy was 43 at the time, which puts the two men at either end of the common Civil war age spectrum. I have not found them listed on any rosters as yet. However, Saunders W. Handy lists his military service as "CA" [Confederate Army] on the 1910 Census of Patrick County. I will dig a little more.
