John Ashley Boyett (GG Grandfather of Al Barrs, Jr.) father of Francis, William and Edward Boyett, CSA Soldiers 1st Symons and 50th Regiment

John Ashley Boyett was born 1816 in Wayne County NC. He married Nancy Holwell in JAN 1837 in Lowndes County Georgia. Nancy Holwell was born on JAN 15, 1817 in Lowndes County Georgia. Ashley Boyet enlisted May 6, 1864 at Quitman, Brooks County, Georgia in CSA Company E, 1st Georgia Infantry Reserves (Symon’s) and was captured at Fort McAllister December 13, 1864 by Union General Sherman’s ‘march to the sea’ troops with his is son Edward J. Boyett and GG Grandfather James C. Barrs. Ashley Boyett and Edward J. Boyett were transported to the Union prison camp on Point Lookout Maryland. James C. Barrs was transported to the Ft. Delaware prison.

After spending the winter in the cold damp prison camp on the coast of Maryland he too became gravely ill. On February 13, 1865 he was among CSA troops pardoned and exchanged for Union prisoners at Coxe’s Landing on the James River. He was rushed to the CSA Receiving Hospital #9 in Richmond Virginia and the following day transferred to the CSA Jackson Hospital in Richmond. After being pardoned from the Union Point Lookout Prison Camp, exchanged on February 13, 1865 and hospitalized he died on March 1, 1865 in Jackson CSA Hospital in Richmond VA and was buried March 2, 1865 in the Hollywood Cemetery under the name ‘A. S. Bagat (section W, lot 580).’ His two oldest sons Francis M. and William N. Boyett had died in 1863 and were also interned in the Hollywood Cemetery. Ashley Boyett’s 3rd oldest son Edward J. Boyett, who had been captured by Union forces and also held in the Point Lookout Prison Camp, was the only family of Ashley Boyett to survive The War. His youngest son John Ashley was to young to serve. His wife Nancy Holwell-Boyett would die in my Great Grandparents, Mary Elizabeth Boyett-Barrs and Isaac Newton Barrs’ home in Day, Lafayette County, FL in 1892 and is buried in Day, FL.

Boyett, Francis M. Confederate Infantry 50th Regiment, Georgia Infantry Company K
Francis M. Boyett was born 1842 in Lowndes County GA the oldest son of John Ashley and Nancy Boyett of Lowndes County, which would become Brooks County Georgia in 1858. He was wounded at Chancellorsville and died his wounds and Typhoid Fever in Richmond on June 12, 1863. He is buried at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond. He served under the command of CSA General Robert E. Lee attached to the Army of Northern Virginia.

William N. Boyett was born 1844 in Lowndes County GA the second oldest son of John Ashley and Nancy Boyett of Lowndes County, which would become Brooks County Georgia in 1858. He was the brother of Francis M. Boyett. He died in Richmond VA on March 24, 1863, and is buried in Hollywood Cemetery. He served under the command of CSA General Robert E. Lee attached to the Army of Northern Virginia.

Edward Jasper Boyett was born 1847 the third oldest son of John Ashley and Nancy Boyett of Lowndes County, which would become Brooks County Georgia in 1858. He would survive The War and passed in 1925 at Fenholloway, Taylor County, Florida.
