From Staff Officers in Gray: A Biographical Register of the Staff Officers in the Army of Northern Virginia by Robert E. L. Krick, p. 67 --

Barbour, John Strode, Jr. b. Culpeper Co., Virginia, Dec. 29, 1820. att. Wm. & Mary and UVa. Virginia lawyer, legislator and railroad president. VADC to Cocke, Apr. 1861. Postwar U.S. Senator d. Washington, D.C., May 14, 1892. bur "Poplar Hill," Prince George's Co., Maryland.

Apparently never commissioned as a Confederate officer and probably never appeared in Confederate uniform.
