POW records were used during the U.S. War Department project to create compiled military service files for Confederate soldiers. In many cases all we know about a Confederate soldier comes from POW records. There's rarely a need to consult POW records unless we suspect that clerks made a mistake or overlooked a name on their records.

To order a VA headmarker, all you need to authenticate the soldier's service is a copy of his CSR. Based on the research done by George and JR, this young man had more than one 'official' CSR. Some Federal officers made the claim that Mosby's men were partisans and not soldiers, but Mosby's command organized under the same authority as other Confederate cavalry units.
