Re: Clues to Spotslvania Unknowns?

Warner was wounded at Sparksburg on September 17, 1862.

The following document is found in his file. No record of death.

George Martin

Headquarters, 31st Va Regiment, April 1st 1864.

General S. Cooper, Adj. & Inspector General.

William Warner of Company I, 31st Va Regiment, born in the State of Virginia and of which he claims to be, and is a citizen, having been wounded and being unable to carry a musket without suffering, took the Colors of this Regiment in October last, and has borne them gallantly till the present time. He is a man of character and a faithful soldier. I recommend that he be appointed Ensign of the Regiment.

Respectfully,
/s/ JS Hoffman, Col.

Has endorsements by a Brig. Gen,, Lt. Gen. Ewell, and forwarded to Secretary of War. I cannot read the exact wordings.
