Hello Shane,

You are looking for James R. Smith who served in Company A, 5th Battalion Virginia Reserves. The captain of the company was Cabell Hairston. The battalion was commanded by Patrick Miller Henry, a grandson of Patrick Henry.

Organized on September 12, 1864, the battalion is known is most records as "Henry's Regiment Virginia Reserves". From the pension files of these men, it is quite evident that many of them were unaware that their unit had been designated the 5th Battalion Virginia Reserves on February 27, 1865.

Smith's pension application was witnessed by Henry County comrades Zachary Taylor Cahill and John Wesley Cheshire.
James R. Smith was a member of Stuart-Hairston Camp, United Confederate Veterans. Smith's name appears on the pension applications of James B. Merriman and William G. Philpott [who also thought he served in the "67th Virginia Reserves"].
