In western Virginia, citizens were sent to Camp Chase or Johnson Island in Ohio, though they also held prisoners from all over the South. Although the Federal authorities paroled Gen. Alfred Beckley to his home, Wheeling insisted he be sent to Camp Chase, where he spent two years. Many did not survive and are buried in mass graves. The West Virginia Civil War Almanac, Vol. 1, has a list of the West Virginians who died there. This website also has an alphabetical listing of the prisoners from Camp Chase, which may be useful to some.
