Captain Gaither was the commanding officer of Company K, 1st VA Cav. WW Goldsborough's book The Maryland Line in the Confederate Army has Capt Gaither resigning as the Captain. Dan Hartzler's book Marylander's in the Confederacy has Gaither as Lt Col of the 1st MD Cav and a third source has Gaither as Lt Col of the 1st VA Cav.

Would some one be as so kind to help me straighten this out. What was Gaither's final unit and rank?
