Re: Civil War Soldiers & Sailors System Question

As one who wrote several of the volumes in the Virginia Regimental Histories Series I have subsequently found in my own works several men who had National Archives files or other evidence of service in the regiment but whose records never made the printed version. In my case it was primarily caused by not looking closely enough at the galley proofs sent back by the publisher for me to review. The names which I had submitted in my manuscript were just not included in the galleys. I edited the galleys, but did not do an effective name for name cross check between the manuscript and the galleys. In subsequent review and editing of my own work over the years to expand the rosters and correct the errors in the original publications I have found other bizarre occurrences where more diligent research and verification might have precluded errors in the original work. For example, I listed a soldier's widow as a member of the regiment based on not cross checking and verifying the primary record that listed the widow as a soldier. My desire to have gotten it completely right the first time was high, but clearly the process was not perfect. That's a a disservice to those who served and to those who want to learn about and honor that service. By the same token, in an effort to be all inclusive, names of men were listed in my works as members of the unit who I have now come to know never served in the unit. So the rosters are in error not due to ommission but because of a desire to avoid omitting someone who might have served. For these reasons and others, I have continued to review, edit and expand the rosters and histories of the units whose histories I wrote. Perhaps one day those revisions will help future researchers. That said, without the monumental effort undertaken by H.E Howard, the regimental histories series would not have been produced and there would be no need for this discussion. There is certainly more work to do on the Virginia regiments and batteries. I would note that North Carolina has produced more than one set of histories of its regiments and batteries. A second effort with regard to Virginia units awaits the next person willing to take on the challenge of completing and correcting the record.
