The Samuel Jenkins you are researching is my great-great-grandfather. A few years ago ago I came across an old posting by another researcher, Rick Brown, who had Samuel's birth certificate. Rick (whom I've had no contact with) in his posting wrote that the certificate listed Lucy Humphrey as Samuel's mother and Samuel Jenkins senior as the father. Lucy and Samuel most likely were never married. Lucy married Daniel Anglo at Botetourt County in 1834, which would be about when Samuel junior was born. The Anglo family is listed in the 1850 Roanoke, Virginia census (Lucy 35; Daniel 46) along with Samuel Jenkins junior (16). Samuel Jenkins senior (41) and Temperance Jenkins (38) are also listed on the same census. Samuel Jenkins senior and Temperance (Tempey) Robinson were married in 1837 in Botetourt County.

Samuel junior's future wife, Frances Snyder (my great-great grandmother - married in 1853 at Roanoke County), is living with the Aliff family in the same 1850 census and is listed as 18 years old. Samuel's son, Rivercomb Jenkins, is my great-grandfather. Frances Snyder (Snider) Jenkins moved the family to Ohio as did her (cousin?) Susan Snyder who was married to Samuel Puckett. Samuel Puckett and Samuel Jenkins junior both served in the 42nd and both died. The Puckett family lived in Franklin County, Virginia in the 1860 census. Francis Jenkins' daughter, Mary, married Susan and Samuel Puckett's son, Samuel Puckett junior.

I visited the Confederate Cemetery, Univ. Va and Samuel J. Jenkins is named on the memorial statue located at the center of the cemetery. But his tombstone is among the many missing in the cemetery.
