In Mr. Chapla's book on the 50th Va. shows that from 05/25/1862 until his death in action at Kelly's Store on 01/30/1863, the 50th Virginia was commanded by Col. Thomas Poage of Pulaski County, Va. Col. Poage's body was returned to his home county and he is buried in the Newbern Cemetery there.
However, there are a couple of places where I have seen a reference to a "Col. Rodgers" commanding the 50th. In particular, Col. John McCausland's report of the action at Charleston, Virginia (now, West Virginia) in September, 1962 [ see the Official Records, Series I, Vol, XIX, Part I, page 1090 : http://ehistory.osu.edu/osu/sources/recordView.cfm?page=1090&dir=027 ]. Within his report, McCausland says that he supported center of a line of LtCol. Derrick's skirmishers with "Colonel Rodgers' [Poage's] regiment"... His report says Rodgers but Poage's name is in parentheses.
Does anyone have any information on this Colonel Rodgers? I can't find his name on any of the rosters that I've seen.
Thanks.
