In Response To: VA Military Academies ()

In Caroline County, near Port Royal, was Rappahannock Academy founded in 1809. Changed to Rapahannock Academy and Military Institute in 1847. By 1860 This school was as large as VMI. It was a full fledged Military Institute with all students in uniform. It closed around 1900 and in 1942 it was levelled and became part of US Army Fort AP Hill. During the War (1861-1865) many students enlisted. In 1861, The Then Principal, Thomas Rowe Thornton was offered the command of the Caroline Light Dragoons which was mustered into the Army as Co. B, 9th VA Cavalry, but declined and became the Capt. of the Caroline Light Artillery. Many students from Rappahannock Academy and Military Institute left school to enlist. In Fall's book on the history of Port Royal VA is a partial list of students enrolled in 1852. If you know the name of the soldier, I can see if it is listed among these students.
