Sergeant Gibson R. Bowles of Company G, 42nd Virginia died 13 July 1863 at the US General Hospital in Frederick, Maryland, and was buried in grave 203 on 14 July. His skull is in the collection of the National Museum of Health and Medicine as specimen number 2494 (source: Greg Coco's book, Gettysburg's Confederate Dead). John D. Chapla's book in the Virginia Regimental Histories Series indicates 4th Sergeant Bowles was wounded in the neck and face at Gettysburg and was captured on 5 July at Boonsboro, Maryland.
