From what I've been able to determine, Co I 12th Va Infantry enlisted 11 June 1861 for one year. They were reorganized and dropped from the regimental return in May 1862. They were replaced by 2nd Co I in June 1862 and served as an unattached company until Nov 1863 when they became 2nd Co H, 9th Va Inf.
The Virginia Regimental Series for the 12th and 9th Infantry has very little information on this company. Does anyone know of a good resources to determine in what capacity this company served and/or where between May 1862 and November 1863? Also, what would cause a company to be detached and then ssigned to a new unit?
