"Jim Lewis, Jackson's famed black cook, soldier, and friend was remembered as having the honor of leading Jackson's horse during the Southern general's funereal procession. This honor was traditionally given to an army officer, yet because of the sacred bond between Jackson and Jim, Jim was given one of the highest honors at the funeral of the South's greatest general."
Actually Jackson appeared to be a civil rights activist for various reasons. It would be proper for the black population to honor his memory on Lee / Jackson day.
