Johnny Reb listed the Marvel book in his post. This, in my opinion is probably the best acount extant. Since the book is out of print, it can get a bit pricey. Jeff Weaver gives an account of the fight in his history of Barr's Battery, Virginia Light Artillery, which was instrumental in the defeat of the Union force on October 2, 1864. This book is available from H.E. Howard. My Great-Great-Grandfather(64th Va. Mounted Infantry) was mortally wounded in a fight with Federal cavalry on October 1, 1864, in a delaying action to give the troops at Saltville time to prepare for Burbbridge's attack.
