Re: Balt. Art. and Carpenter's Va. battery

Bryce,

Sure, I will put a copy to you in the mail tomorrow. Incidentally, Hatton mentions that the battery to their right was so shattered that his battery had to lend them men to get their guns from position. He is describing the aftermath of the artillery bombardment on the afternoon of 2 July 1863 at Gettysburg from Benner's hill on the Confederate left. This shattered battery was likely Captain Joseph Carpenter's, which had been formed out of Company A of the 27th Virginia Regiment in August 1861. Casualty figures vary, but Carpenter's battery reportedly lost five killed outright, with 26 more or less seriously wounded (three of these died before the battle was over), and another 10-12 struck who were able to remain on duty. These numbers were provided by Robert Irvine Anthony in a letter dated 18 July 1863. The eight dead were buried in a single trench, according to a separate source.
