Here are the only two J. Townes listed in Virginia Units, other than one James, Private, Company E, 3rd Virginia Cavalry

John E.Townes, age 16, enlisted in Company I, 3rd Battalion Local Defense Troops, May 31, 1864 at Richmond, Virginia, he was employed in the Medical Purveyors Office, Richmond

The 3rd (also known as Henley's and as McAnerney's) Battalion Virginia Infantry, Local Defense Troops was organized June 29, 1863, and having been increased to ten companies it was reorganized as the 3rd Regiment Virginia Infantry, Local Defense Troops by S. O. No. 226, A. & I. G. O., dated September 23, 1864

John Townes, enlisted as a Private in Captain Richard F. Jarvis' Company, Archer's Battalion, Virginia Reserves, May 5, 1864, detailed May 25 to report to Confederate Prison on Washington

This company subsequently became Company E, 3rd (Archer's) Battalion, Virginia Reserves
