Fisher's Creek (April 6, 1865)

"Lynchburg in the Civil War" contains a roster for the 11th Va. Infantry. In the roster, several soldiers are identified as having been captured at Fisher's Creek on April 6, 1865 and later released from Newport News. I have never heard of this battle as I imagine it is overshadowed by Saylers Creek in which it seems that most of the captured men were sent to Pt. Lookout.

My interest is that I have an ancestor (GGF) who left the reserves in Nelson Co. in 1864 and joined the CS Marines at Drewry's Bluff. He is listed as having been captured with the 18th Va. Inf. on April 6 but there is no reference to a battle. For all I know, he may have been "separated" from his unit since the naval contingent was captured at Saylers Creek. Perhaps he was "high tailing" it for home.

Anyway, he was subsequently released from Newport News as were the men captured at Fisher's Creek. His name was James Burton Ewers but his last name is incorrectly listed as Evers in the 18th Va. regimental history. He died in 1905 and his widow received a pension for his service.

Does anybody have info on the battle of Fisher's Creek on April 6, 1865 ?
