John Sample, Civil War veteran

Searching for letters, journals, and other personal documents referencing the life and military service of John Sample, who served as principal musician of the 108th U.S. Colored Infantry during the Civil War. Born in Fredericksburg, Virginia, about 1845, he went on to join the regular army as a Buffalo Soldier. He left the army about 1885 as sergeant major of the Twenty-fourth U.S. Infantry. Any and all help appreciated.
