I hope this post is not too late for your use as I just ran accross it. The Wyatt Sharp Meador of Summersville, Nicholas County WV referred to above is/was my great grandfather. According to several published local histories, i,e, Rev. Shirley Donnely of Oak Hill, WV, he was indeed in Pickett's Brigade at Gettysburg and was one of the hundred or so that did cross the stone wall. He was however shot and wounded in the face by a musket or mini-ball and captured. This wound left him deaf for the remainder of his life. He was cared for by the north and later was returned/exchanged to the southern cause. I have copies of some of his confederate army "pay envelopes" from this period which note his status/location/condition during this time. He later rejoined the active service and was in a unit with Lee at Appomattox at the time of the surrender. He returned to Summersville and lived out his life, working as a carpenter. My grandfather Baumgartner (married to Meador's daughter Welthia) told me that Mr Meador constructed his own coffin at some time prior to his death. Regards, Ed Baumgartner
