July 9. 1864 [With Jubal Early] "We went on to Fredrick City, the enemy falling back towards Monocacy Junction. We had some skirmishing and artillery practice before we reached the river [Monocacy]. The enemy resisted our passage most of the day, but MaCausland dashed over on their left and gained and important position, and Gordon followed with his Division and flanked them, and drove them off in gallant style; at about 1-1/2 o'clock P. M. Ramseur advanced on them in front and engaged them there and across the river. Rodes marched out on the Baltimore Road and engaged a small force there and drove it across the river. The rout was complete." [Make Me a Map of the Valley, The Civil War Journal of Stonewall Jackson's Topographer, Jedediah Hotchkiss, SMU Press,1973, pp. 214/5]
