I appreciate your research into the etymology of "sharpshooter." I'm not good at that art, but it has always fascinated me.

I was taken by your mention of the kinship of the word to Old Frisian. The last of the Germanic tribes to invade England in the 450-600 year period were the Jutes, who came from the area of modern Friesland and the Frisian Islands off the Dutch coast. I worked with some of the Dutch Navy a long time ago, and while I couldn't make out the drift of conversations in Dutch, when a couple of Frisian speakers -- a Dutch dialect -- would speak to each other, I could actually follow the gist of their conversation. Pretty close, I'd say, to reading Beowulf in high school even further back. Frisian is as close to modern English as you can get.

Re where I've been; taking a semi-Sabbatical bur still dabbling in a couple of Civil War research projects so as not to get rusty.
