Company A of the 9th Regiment Virginia Infantry became the "Salem Flying Artillery" Battery. The roster of the battery lists Private George W. Lowry (variant spellings Lowrey, Lowery). The unit was organized at Salem in Roanoke County, Virginia on 30 June 1860. The commander of the battery, Captain Charles Beale Griffin, is buried in Salem's West Hill Cemetery.
